I switched to Lab last month for teaching, and so far it's going well. I think the main problems are for people used to the classic notebook to go to the new interface.Wed Oct 27 13:27:50 +0000 2021

I tried looking for the word "official" on the front page of http://pypi.org, on https://pypi.org/project/pip/, and on https://packaging.python.org/guides/tool-recommendations/. I found it nowhere. PyPA repeatedly stated that they're not an "Authority".Fri Oct 29 07:57:43 +0000 2021
pip is sanctioned by no one, it seems.

Anaconda Inc provides the infra for http://anaconda.org, the repository of conda packages, and maintains conda, the official CLI to install them. anybody can upload packages using channels, and conda-forge is the largest one, community-maintained. mamba is a community CLI.Fri Oct 29 07:58:33 +0000 2021

Even the "PyPI is for Python packages" line can be quite misleading. Are SciPy and Tensorflow and PyTorch Python packages, or C++ & Fortran packages? Is ipyleaflet a Python package, or a JavaScript package?Fri Oct 29 08:04:59 +0000 2021

Since complex packages started publishing wheels, many people ceased to *be forced* to either use conda or install proper compilers. However, the PyTorch wheel is +800 MB https://hpc.guix.info/blog/2021/09/whats-in-a-package/, PyArrow and SciPy maintainers spend hundreds of hours maintaining wheels, etc.Fri Oct 29 08:09:44 +0000 2021

In an alternative universe, 2012 PyPA/PSF says "wow, conda solved the problem of compiled extensions! thank you very much ❣️ let's make conda a multi-stakeholder project, recommend it to everyone, make pip simpler, and be friends".Fri Oct 29 08:14:21 +0000 2021

I have mixed feelings about this. Lots of advantages, but also deviates from "standard Python". Wdyt?

As @eevee wrote more eloquently than me, the reasons Copilot looks magical are that we coders (1) still write code that is too low level and (2) reinvent the wheel over and over again. https://twitter.com/DynamicWebPaige/status/1454465259683532809Sat Oct 30 16:37:40 +0000 2021
